College of Arts and Sciences
Just from looking at the title, it may seem like “arts” and “sciences” are at opposite ends of the spectrum. But here at UM, it all makes sense. Our students are preparing to change the world for the better, and that requires a dual perspective. It means not only taking a scientific approach through asking the right questions and formulating hypotheses, but it also means that an artistic use of creativity and attention to detail is paramount. From French to Philosophy, from Chemistry to History, students in the College of Arts and Sciences all have one thing in common: they’re going places.

Our Mission is to educate citizens and prepare them for a diverse and changing world.
To meet that goal, we strive to develop in students higher-order thinking skills, a substantial body of knowledge, a commitment to use and appreciate learning, effective communication skills, an awareness of human commonalities and differences, and a concern for the common good.
With departments in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the College of Arts and Sciences offers major and minor programs of study for students seeking a liberal arts education.
